Thrillers

Nine Lives (Peter Swanson)

There are many books that attempt to be thrillers. But somehow, they end up being a half hearted hogwash, often marred by a clumsy end after an otherwise decent plot. Nine Lives by Peter Swanson (yes, I need to specify this since I saw at least three books on Amazon with the same title!) is a most authentic thriller I have read in a long time! It certainly is the best of this year, so far. It comes packed with a chilling plot, some tantalizing situations, hard to guess suspense and a fast-paced, gripping narration with not a smidgen of drag at any point of the book.

Imagine receiving a list of 9 names – including yours, with no explanation. It most certainly brings an eerie feeling sensing something wrong. This chilling idea forms the basic plot of this book. It turns out to be a list of people who …

The Magicians Of Mazda: Bharat Series Continues To Intrigue

The Magicians Of Mazda | Ashwin Sanghi

In his widely acknowledged book How To Stop Worrying And Start Living, Dale Carnegie urges you to read something that requires effort, thought and concentration, everyday – making you learn something useful. As with all Ashwin Sanghi books, The Magicians Of Mazda fits the bill perfectly yet again. While asking for your concentration, the book leaves you wholly enriched with something to gain in the form of the abundance of knowledge the book exudes. This latest offering in the Bharat Series has all that you can expect from an Ashwin Sanghi book. It has history, science, mythology, theology, some ancient relics open to various interpretations and puzzles to be solved.

The Magicians Of Mazda is heavily focused on the Zoroastrian history and has a Parsi community backdrop. The book starts with a fascinating setting with a theft in the British Museum where the Cyrus Cylinder gets stolen. …

A Tidy Ending (Joanna Cannon)🥈🔰

A Tidy Ending | Book Review

Winner:
2nd Ranked Book 2022;
Best Negative Character 2022 (Linda Hammett)

As the cliché goes, Never judge a book by it’s cover. The cover was precisely what drew me into A Tidy Ending to start with. A bright yellow, perfectly upholding the summer feel and ushering in a brightness, positivity and warmth. A little birdie perching on the daffodil frame, inviting you to come and read this one. If there ever was an award for the best designed cover, this book makes a vehement claim.

At times, some long accepted adages stand to be challenged. For, A Tidy Ending with it’s beautiful cover is even more beautiful with what lies inside it. Joanna Cannon has a winner at hand without question, one of the best books of 2022.

The story is centered around Linda, who works at a charity shop and has just moved in to a new …

The Book Of Cold Cases: My Covid Read!

The Book Of Cold Cases | My Covid Read

After two years of dodging and escaping, the corona virus finally caught me this week! And, while it was a time for some forced rest, I did manage to sneak in some bit of reading here n there! I was about a third into The Book Of Cold Cases when I contracted the virus. So, the majority of this book was read recovering!

As anyone would tell you, this probably is not the best book to read in a situation like mine. You probably would do good to have a feel good, heart warming and funny book as a companion. But to be honest, I quite enjoyed this!

A true crime blogger, Shea, finds herself personally and deeply involved in an unsolved Lady Killer case as she tries to investigate and uncover some lost facts. It turns out, she herself has been subject to trauma in her childhood. And that …

The Night Shift | Book Review

The Night Shift | Book Review

Y2K. Rings a bell? I am sure, the 90s kids would have a lot to say about it. How the world seemed to be perplexed by this monstrous computer bug that threatened to bring planes crashing down and the world to a screeching halt.

Mention of this in the book’s excerpt and it’s setting in the 90s era made me have a peep into it. I had actually been reading samples of a few fresh releases, trying to pick my next read. And with The Night Shift, in no time I whizzed through it’s sample and made a quick purchase to continue with this page turner.

Set in a video parlor with customers borrowing & returning video tapes ushers in that 90s nostalgia that we so fondly reminisce. But, that’s where it ends. For thereon, Alex Finlay’s book swiftly assumes an out-and-out thriller appeal. A hard core crime & mystery …

Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead | Book Review

Finlay Dockovan Knocks 'Em Dead | Book Review

There is a special thrill in reading books from a series as opposed to stand alone books. Mostly, you get attached to the recurring characters. There is some sort of continuity in their plots which each sequel carries forward. Now, it is upon the author how well they execute it. Elle Cosimano’s Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead is a super entertaining read which made me regret not having read it’s prequel yet.

The story, in a nutshell, revolves around an inconspicuous and routine internet forum for women. On the face of it, it provides frustrated women to rant about their useless husbands & boyfriends. But as it would become apparent, it is just a front for something far more sinister. Some coded messages, some dangerous games!

We have our protagonist Finlay chancing upon one such threat to her ex husband’s life. And off starts a journey of adventure and thrill …
