The Edge

Travis Devine returns for a second run with the much awaited, highly anticipated sequel to The 6:20 Man! The former U.S. Army Ranger Devine is assigned a new case by his mentor Emerson Campbell to investigate the murder of Jenny Silkwell, a case of personal interest to Campbell. As Devine travels to the small town of Putnam in Maine, he uncovers various secrets & the darker side of this small seemingly quaint town.

The Edge is everything you look for in a thriller, more pertinently, a David Baldacci thriller. It is fast paced, gripping and addictive from the word go. The twists, the constant lurking danger, the ruthless brute power displayed by Devine at various instances and the emotional side to this rouge of a man – it all adds up to an exhilarating read. The small little bits & pieces that Devine keeps putting together keeps the reader invested at all times. Baldacci guards the mystery quite well, though it has become quite easy to expect the least expected character to be the culprit (take the hint?)!

Personally I found The Edge to be one-up on it’s prequel. Probably the familiarity with the character and the plot in itself attributed to the same. Talking of the character, I somehow am left wondering – what separates Travis Devine from Aloysius Archer? Two very similar characters – both former Army recruits, both out on somewhat mysterious circumstances, both loners & roguish and both having a good heart. I won’t complain though. I can never have enough of Aloysius Archer. And to have one more splendid character doesn’t hurt!

Towards the end, I found the book getting a little too dark and macabre. The ultimate revelation and motives lacked a bit of the Oomph factor.

Conclusion

There is no Baldacci book that I haven’t loved & enjoyed. No different here. The Edge is every bit worth a read and doesn’t disappoint on any account. It only further cements David Baldacci as my go-to author. The book ends leaving the train episode from the start of the book hanging unaddressed – a prologue to it’s sequel!
