The Cartographers | Book Review

The Cartographers | Book Review | The Book Blog

Peng Shepherd’s latest offering, is centered around maps, some hidden secrets, a series of murders down the line, and a whole lot of fantasy. Our protagonist Nell is the daughter of two distinguished cartographers – Daniel and Tam, and is herself a very competent cartographer. The story sets into motion with Nell finding a seemingly nugatory, old map in her father’s belongings after he passes away in his NYPL office. This happens to be the same inconsequential map that she had discovered seven years ago while working under her father. It had led to a big showdown between the two and consequently, her expulsion.

Of course, there is more to it than is apparent. And hence, Nell embarks a treacherous and grueling search, trying to unveil the hidden truths surrounding this map. In the process, she keeps uncovering the past of her parents and their group of friends. They all, …

A Brush With Love | Book Review

A Brush With Love | Book Review

I am not a big fan of romantic novels and rarely go for them. But I made an exception with Mazey Eddings’ debut – A Brush With Love (Yes, another debut of 2022!). Thanks to it’s extremely intriguing premise, I was quick to pick on this book.

An aspiring dental surgeon, slipping over the stairs, bumping into a handsome young man and falling in love. Perfect ingredients for a swashbuckling romcom! A Brush With Love is your raunchy little entertainer that showcases those vulnerable times of life. The sweet pain of infatuations when the heart battles with the brain, leaving you in shambles.

Harper Horowitz, our bright aspirant is committed towards securing a residency. With a history of chronic anxiety, she is carving her path – determined yet vulnerable. But with Dan around, her whole life seems to be derailed.

A Brush With Love takes you through the conflicting desires, …

Wahala (Nikki May)

Wahala | Book Review

Trouble! The literal meaning of Wahala. And, the book – a complete riot! This is one heck of a debut, adding to the ever growing list of stunning books from first-time authors. A wacky read, Wahala is a fun filled entertainer from the word go. Friendship, misunderstandings, love and deceit – spun together with some splendid writing by Nikki May.

Wahala is the story of three mixed race friends, namely Ronke, Boo and Simi. Now living in London, the three are inseparable and always have each other’s back. But only until the conniving Isobel interlopes and causes havoc in their friendship.

Nikki May takes you through the parallel stories of each character as Isobel dislodges their lives. Isobel who is Simi’s friend from school, gains entry into their gang. Consequently, her vile intentions soon take root. First, in soft soaping Boo to become her puppet. And next, brain washing …

Lords Of The Deccan | Book Review

Lords Of The Deccan | Book Review

Hey Guys, how are you doing? I am here today with a new book recommendation. For all Historical Fiction fans, Lords Of The Deccan is here to entice you! Written by Indian author  Anirudh Kanisetti, this book beautifully details the dynasties prevalent in Medieval India. Particularly, it showcases the southern & Deccan regions. The book has three parts to it. We will be looking at the first part here.

The first part of “Lords Of The Deccan” focusses on the rise of the Chalukya dynasty. This is the period between the late 6th to 8th centuries. From being meager agriculturists, how they go on to become the fierce rulers who dominated the Deccan. A transition so wonderfully narrated by Anirudh Kanisetti.

The book presents vivid accounts of the Chalukyas emperors. The most prominent of them is Pulakeshin II who virtually conquered majority of the Deccan region. In essence, his …

A Flicker In The Dark | Book Review

A Flicker In The Dark | Stacy Willingham | Book Review

It seems a while since I had last read a good thriller. I think, The Judge’s List it was, back in October. With a lot of emotional, uplifting and ‘goody-goody’ reading off-late, I was ready for an edge-of-your-seat, crisp and fast-paced thriller. So, having prepared myself to be scared, I took my pick with A Flicker In The Dark by Stacy Willingham, another debut novel – fourth for this year already (see links at the end)!

The first thing that I realized about A Flicker In The Dark was that it is a very fluent book. Stacy Willingham’s writing is very easy-to-read and you would find yourself sailing through the pages effortlessly. And it works wonderfully in the book’s favor.

Talking of the plot, this very interesting story is centered around Doctor Chloe Davis, a woman in her thirties, whose father had been convicted of serial killings of 6 girls …

Black Cake (Charmaine Wilkerson)

Black Cake | Book Review

I recall, on the last day of school I was going about asking my old teachers for their autographs. When I caught my 8th standard teacher unawares, she said “I would really like to write something good for you”. Decades later today, this memory surfaces up so naturally as I read the last bits of Black Cake. This is the feeling I share at this point of time. I really wish to write something good for this book by debut writer Charmaine Wilkerson.

Being a highly anticipated book of 2022, I was expecting it to be a quality read. And, it doesn’t fall short at all. The brilliance of this book stumped me. If one could embrace a story, it is this beautiful story that I would.

Black Cake is a multi-generational story of grit, tradition, inheritance, friendship, memories, racism and secrets. And all interwoven around the most powerful emotion …
