How Not To Drown In A Glass Of Water

How Not To Drown In A Glass Of Water

Look what I found!! This is exactly how I feel having picked this book from Angie Cruz. Honestly, I had seen this book a couple of times in the past few weeks. The title seemed indicative of some self-help or better living book. But when it popped up again last week, I decided to give it a go. And boy, am I not pleased!

How Not To Drown In A Glass Of Water is a unique story narrated by the protagonist Cara Romero – a Dominican immigrant, in her mid 50s & having lost her job to Recession. Enrolled in a 12 session job counselling program to help procure a suitable job, she instead ends up narrating …

Demon Copperhead: A Dark Story With Spurts of Brightness

Demon Copperhead | Book Review

The intended similarity to David Copperfield is what drew me towards this book by Barbara Kingsolver. I usually lack the patience for a weighty 600+ pages book. But such was my ardour to read the modernized version of the classic that I pepped myself to do it.

Demon Copperhead traces the life of the protagonist Damon Fields – from the time of his birth in freakish circumstances, his life as an orphan accentuated by his journey through various foster homes, his adult life, a short lived fame and the unsavoury habits that threaten to ruin his life.

The book starts with a whole lot of promise and keeps you engaged with a vivid and realistic narration of the adversity and challenges faced by little Damon starting with his birth in the most bizarre situation. It brings to light so wonderfully well – the hardships that a child is forced …

French Braid by Anne Tyler: A good story dented by unexplained facts

French Braid | Anne Tyler | Unexplained Questions

French Braid is a story that spans 4 generations of the Garret family. A family saga that intricately takes you through the life of the Garrets, vividly showcasing their extremely varied personalities, the expectations, the disappointments, the responsibilities, the fears, the love and eventually the full circle of life.

To start with, just as a family drama is expected to be, French Braid is dotted with some neatly crafted characters. While you have Mercy coming across as much of a self centered and selfish person, Robin on the other hand is someone who may be socially inept but a loving husband. Alice is a bossy yet protective older sister, Lily – the rebellious one and David the youngest who probably is the most sensitive of all.

The relations between them are quite well pictured as well. A father who treats his son high handed, a son whose expectations of his …

We Are The Brennans: Solid Debut by Tracey Lange

We Are The Brennans | Review

We Are The Brennans marks another solid debut for 2022 with Tracey Lange bringing forth an intense, high tension family drama that keeps you engulfed start to finish. I went into the book with some expectations as with stories based around a strong family backdrop. Yet, I wasn’t quite sure of what to expect! I just knew it showed great promise.

So, this is a story about the Brennan family (of course!), more specifically revolving around Sunday Brennan, the only sister to three brothers Denny, Jackie and Shane. Add to them Kane, who isn’t related by birth but is as much a (unofficial) Brennan having lived most of his life in this house, as one of them. I won’t go much into the detail, but just say – there is a dark secret that Sunday has been guarding since the past 5 years, and that forms the basic theme of …

A Tidy Ending (Joanna Cannon)🥈🔰

A Tidy Ending | Book Review

Winner:
2nd Ranked Book 2022;
Best Negative Character 2022 (Linda Hammett)

As the cliché goes, Never judge a book by it’s cover. The cover was precisely what drew me into A Tidy Ending to start with. A bright yellow, perfectly upholding the summer feel and ushering in a brightness, positivity and warmth. A little birdie perching on the daffodil frame, inviting you to come and read this one. If there ever was an award for the best designed cover, this book makes a vehement claim.

At times, some long accepted adages stand to be challenged. For, A Tidy Ending with it’s beautiful cover is even more beautiful with what lies inside it. Joanna Cannon has a winner at hand without question, one of the best books of 2022.

The story is centered around Linda, who works at a charity shop and has just moved in to a new …

Black Cake (Charmaine Wilkerson)

Black Cake | Book Review

I recall, on the last day of school I was going about asking my old teachers for their autographs. When I caught my 8th standard teacher unawares, she said “I would really like to write something good for you”. Decades later today, this memory surfaces up so naturally as I read the last bits of Black Cake. This is the feeling I share at this point of time. I really wish to write something good for this book by debut writer Charmaine Wilkerson.

Being a highly anticipated book of 2022, I was expecting it to be a quality read. And, it doesn’t fall short at all. The brilliance of this book stumped me. If one could embrace a story, it is this beautiful story that I would.

Black Cake is a multi-generational story of grit, tradition, inheritance, friendship, memories, racism and secrets. And all interwoven around the most powerful emotion …
